Sensitive teeth

When external factors (heat, cold, acid, sugar) cause brief, intense pain, without a cavity being involved, we talk about tooth sensitivity.

THE DIFFERENT CAUSES OF TOOTH SENSITIVITY

Tooth sensitivity results from exposure of the tubuli, the tiny canals that run through dentin (the middle layer of the tooth), to external aggression. Normally, dental enamel and cementum protect the tubulins, but certain causes restrict their protective action, such as :

  • thinning of the enamel, caused by wear ;
  • gum recession;
  • aggressive brushing;
  • excessive consumption of acidic foods;
  • tooth loosening;
  • a broken tooth;
  • teeth grinding;
  • exposure of a tooth root.

SYMPTOMS OF SENSITIVE TEETH

The most common symptoms of tooth sensitivity are as follows:

  • Sensitivity on contact with hot or cold foods;
  • Pain on contact with cold air;
  • Pain from eating acidic or sweet foods;
  • Pain from breathing cold air (e.g. jogging in winter).

HOW CAN I REDUCE MY TOOTH SENSITIVITY?

To avoid making brushing even more aggressive, it is advisable to use a soft toothbrush and not to press too hard.

Your dentist may recommend certain products, such as a special toothpaste or mouthwash. It is advisable to consult your health practitioner regularly, who will suggest the appropriate treatment. In some cases, this may involve a root canal or a gum graft.

EXPECTED RESULTS AFTER TREATMENT

Tooth sensitivity can be reduced by adjusting the way you brush your teeth and your choice of brush. The various procedures performed by your dental surgeon can also significantly reduce tooth sensitivity.

THE COST OF DENTAL TREATMENT: COMBATING TOOTH SENSITIVITY

Depending on the treatment proposed, your dental surgeon and his team will inform you of the cost of combating tooth sensitivity after an initial consultation.
