Tooth sensitivity results from exposure of the tubuli, the tiny canals that run through dentin (the middle layer of the tooth), to external aggression. Normally, dental enamel and cementum protect the tubulins, but certain causes restrict their protective action, such as :
- thinning of the enamel, caused by wear ;
- gum recession;
- aggressive brushing;
- excessive consumption of acidic foods;
- tooth loosening;
- a broken tooth;
- teeth grinding;
- exposure of a tooth root.
